How to plan a savings goal

Turn a savings target and timeline into a simple monthly contribution estimate.

Start with a specific target

A savings goal is easier to act on when it has a clear amount and date. Examples include an emergency fund, school expense, trip or planned purchase.

Convert the goal into a monthly amount

Subtract your current savings from the target, then divide the remaining amount by the number of months available. The Savings Goal Calculator performs this simple calculation.

Test different timelines

If the monthly contribution is not realistic, test a longer timeline or a different target. A calculator does not decide what you should save; it simply makes the trade-off visible.

Remember the assumptions

This simple calculator does not add interest or investment returns. A real savings account may earn interest, and fees or irregular deposits can affect the actual path to the target.
